The genesis of the VarroBook™ started in 1994. Scott Clarke the President of Saranac Studios was a exhibit designer working with numerous curators that were also professors. These Curator/Professors would desire quantities of text that were far in excess of what could be visually handled in an exhibit space. The solution exhibit staff workers created was an exhibit book that fit in the space, was visually attractive could accommodate all the information that the curators produced and most importantly would hold up to heavy usage.

In 1996 Scott Clarke started Clarke Design, designing and fabricating museum quality exhibits. Having used exhibit flip-books in all the previous exhibits he had designed, they were standard feature in the exhibits designed by Clarke Design. As all of the early flip-books in use started to show wear, and design flaws appeared, each version was evaluated (something ALL exhibits should have done) and improved upon. After ten years of installations and as upgrades were designed we realized, we had designed the perfect interpretive flip-book. It was also something that we had not seen anywhere and that there could be a service supplied and brought to the public.

After a patent search came up clean and a note written on the side of the results from the search clerk said “Good idea, should apply for patent.” We went forward to apply and protect the all aspects of the VarroBook™ flip-book system with the US Patent office.
